On 14 February, the Museum of Energy and Technology will invite visitors to celebrate the 22nd birthday of the Museum and the 122nd anniversary of the old Vilnius Power Plant. This year’s programme of events will be packed with events throughout the week.
According to Mykolas Bistrickas, Director of the Museum of Energy and Technology, it has become a tradition to celebrate the Museum’s birthday with a bang: new educational programmes, wonderful evening concerts and a historic tasting dinner.
“The first visitors were invited to the Museum on 14 February 2003, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Vilnius Central Power Plant. The pride of the museum is, of course, and will continue to be, the power station building itself and the authentic equipment of the power station, which was in operation until recently. But now it is not only the industrial heritage that is best preserved in a comprehensive way. It is the perfect place to enjoy interactive science exhibitions, education and excursions. The road we have travelled in 22 years is a success story. We hope to continue to grow and to provide our visitors with unique immersive experiences. Congratulations to Lithuania on the birthday of Lithuania’s largest science museum!”, says the Museum Director, inviting everyone to join the Museum’s birthday celebrations and recharge their batteries for the year ahead.
8 FEBRUARY
The Museum’s birthday celebrations start on 8 February with experimental music virtuosos, who will even break TESLA’S GAMES. “Vilniaus energija will give you an electric shock of maximum volt discharge. Don’t miss out.
9 FEBRUARY
The Energy and Technical Museum will host the third event of the RayDay initiative, which aims to introduce the concept of an alcohol-free rave day to the Lithuanian public! “In addition to quality electronic music and dancing, RayDay events offer participants the opportunity to take part in discussions and workshops, to discover like-minded people and to embrace a healthier way of living and having fun. With non-alcoholic cocktails available during the event, RayDay has no age limit! Time: from 14:00. Price: museum visitor ticket.
14 FEBRUARY
On 14 February, visitors will be invited to learn about industry, science and nature through free guided tours and educational activities.
Schoolchildren are invited to discover the secrets of illusions. During the education, participants will learn what illusions are, how they are created, what a mirage, pareidolia or artificial perspectives are. Participants will learn about moving pictures, admire 3D anaglyphs and discover stunning optical illusions through interactive exhibits.
We will then move with the visitors towards the education “Faraday’s Movement”. In this interactive activity, a favourite of schoolchildren, visitors will learn how electricity was used to create motion and how this motion changed the history of the world! The aim of the education is to convey the impact of the Second Industrial Revolution on human progress. In the theoretical part of the education, you will learn about the different types of motors and the origins of the electric motor. In the practical part of the education, we will replicate an experiment carried out by Michael Faraday in 1821: we will build a model of the world’s first elementary electric motor using readily available materials.
After learning all about motion, it’s easy to invent your own battery or hear about the world in a matchbox. Then we’ll go on guided tours, where our guides will take us through different periods and stages of industry.
The guides at the Museum of Energy and Technology are ready to surprise visitors on their tours. We will start the tour marathon with the much-loved tour “A Day at the Power Plant”. Visitors will learn about the processes, equipment and history of the first power plant in Vilnius on a themed tour. The activity uses modern interactive tools and mobile games.
The “Educate. This is how the power plant works”, you will get to know the authentic surviving equipment of the first Vilnius Central Power Plant, its history and its importance for the modernisation of Vilnius. Understand the working principle of the power plant with the help of a unique, working model of the power plant.
The museum is free of charge. Tickets for the Turning Hall are EUR 3.5 per person.
